Why You'll Love It
The Feel of the Place
Alta began as a silver-mining town in the 1860s and reinvented itself for skiing; its Collins lift (1938) was America's second chairlift, and the town incorporated in 1970.
Alta Ski Area averages more than 500 inches of snow and is one of the few skiers-only resorts in the U.S. In summer, Albion Basin's wildflowers peak in late July, with the Wasatch Wildflower Festival and the hike to Cecret Lake.
Homes are rare: water is limited to the town boundaries under a Salt Lake City contract, so little new building is possible. Buyers should expect avalanche "interlodge" orders that keep everyone indoors, road closures, parking permits, and UDOT's planned winter tolls and buses targeted for 2028.

School boundaries, enrollment, and programs may change over time. Served by Canyons School District. Listings show different high schools for some Alta addresses, and Canyons is reviewing elementary enrollment districtwide through 2026–27 (a proposed Granite–Quail Hollow merger was paused in May 2026). Confirm assignments by address with the district. We recommend confirming attendance boundaries and school assignments directly with the district before purchasing a home.
